The Goldfish's Magical Summer
Lily sat in the shade of the tall palm tree in her backyard, watching her baseball roll away. It had been a bad game—three strikes, and her team lost. She sighed, resting her chin in her palm.
Suddenly, something sparkled in the grass. Not her baseball, but something smaller and brighter. A tiny goldfish, flopping on a single blade of grass, glowing like a little orange star!
"Oh no!" Lily cried. She gently scooped up the fish and ran to her garden fountain. But as soon as the goldfish touched the water, something magical happened. The water began to swirl, and a friendly fox stepped right out of the fountain!
"Thank you, young one," said the fox, shaking water from his orange fur. "I am Finn, and I've been trapped for ages. The Sphinx's riddle kept me prisoner."
"A Sphinx? Like in Egypt?" Lily's eyes went wide.
"Not exactly. Come see!" Finn flicked his tail, and the fountain water rose up like a staircase leading into the sky.
Lily took Finn's paw, and together they climbed into a world above the clouds. There, perched on a fluffy cloud, sat a small Sphinx with kitten paws and butterfly wings.
"To free my friend Finn," the Sphinx purred, "you must answer: What has hands but cannot clap, a face but cannot smile, and tells you when to play and when to work?"
Lily thought hard. Then she remembered something from her room.
"A clock!" she shouted.
The Sphinx smiled. "Correct!" With a sparkle of fairy dust, Finn was free!
"You're brave and clever," Finn said. "Want to play baseball? I bet I can hit a home run!"
That summer, Lily learned that even bad days can lead to magical adventures—and the best friends come when you least expect them. And every time she looked at her palm, she remembered: kindness always unlocks wonderful surprises.
