The Goldfish's Magical Promise

Lily's goldfish, Glub, was not an ordinary fish. He lived in a glass castle on her nightstand, but his scales shimmered like tiny stars, and sometimes when nobody was watching, he would blow bubbles that shaped into hearts. Glub had been Lily's secret friend since her seventh birthday.

One afternoon, Lily sat on her front steps, her baseball glove resting in her lap. Tomorrow was the big game, and she was nervous. Every time she tried to hit the ball, she swung too early or too late. The other kids would laugh. She buried her face in her hands, feeling tears well up.

"I wish I could just be good at baseball," she whispered into her palm.

That night, as she stared at Glub swimming gracefully around his tiny castle, something magical happened. Glub swam right up to the glass and pressed his nose against it. A stream of silver bubbles floated up, and then—pop!—the fishbowl lid opened by itself. Glub leaped out and landed gently in Lily's open palm!

"Lily," said Glub, his voice like gentle ripples, "I've been waiting for you to make a wish. I can help you."

"You can talk?" Lily gasped.

"I can do more than talk," Glub said, his tail flicking happily. "I can show you something important."

The next day at the baseball field, Lily's palm tingled where Glub had rested. When it was her turn to bat, she closed her eyes for a moment and remembered how Glub moved through the water—smooth, confident, never rushing. She took a deep breath, opened her eyes, and watched the ball.

The pitcher threw. Lily waited, watched, and at just the right moment—swing! The ball sailed through the air and landed right in the outfield.

"You did it!" her teammates cheered, jumping up and down. Lily smiled, her heart full like Glub's glass castle.

That night, she whispered to Glub, "Thank you for helping me."

"I didn't make you hit the ball," Glub said with a fishy grin. "I only helped you believe in yourself. You had the magic all along."

Lily laughed and fed Glub an extra treat. Some magic, she realized, comes from believing in yourself and trusting the friends who believe in you, even if they happen to be talking goldfish.
