The Goldfish's Magic Wish

Ten-year-old Maya pressed her nose against the cool glass of her fishbowl. Inside, Goldie the goldfish swam in endless circles, her orange scales shimmering like tiny pieces of the sun.

"I wish you could talk," Maya whispered. "I wish we could go on a real adventure together."

Outside her window, storm clouds gathered. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy, and suddenly—CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree in the backyard, filling Maya's room with blinding purple light.

When Maya blinked her eyes open, Goldie was floating beside her bed, glowing with magical golden sparkles.

"Make a wish, Maya!" Goldie said in a bubbly voice. "The lightning gave me magic for one hour!"

Maya's eyes widened. "I want to meet all the animals in the world!"

Goldie swished her tail, and suddenly they were in a green meadow. A giant brown bull with gentle brown eyes lowered his massive head.

"Hello there," the bull said softly. "I'm Barnaby. I may look fierce, but I love making friends."

A scruffy farm dog came bounding over, his ears flopping. "I'm Buster! Want to play chase?"

Maya laughed and ran with Buster through the meadow while Barnaby plodded along, his hooves making gentle thumping sounds.

Then they saw it—a lonely figure stumbling near the edge of the woods. It was green and ragged, moving stiffly.

"A zombie!" Buster barked, hiding behind Maya.

But the creature looked sad, not scary. Its one eye was friendly, and it held a wilted flower.

"I'm Zed," the zombie said in a whispery voice. "Everyone runs away from me. I just want someone to play with."

Maya stepped forward bravely. "You're not scary, Zed. You're just lonely. Want to be our friend?"

Zed's face lit up. "Really?"

"Really!" said Barnaby warmly. "Friends come in all shapes and sizes."

They played together until Goldie began to fade. "My magic is ending!"

"Thank you, Goldie!" Maya hugged her glowing friend. "This was the best adventure ever."

Maya woke up in her bed. Goldie swam peacefully in her bowl. Had it all been a dream?

Then Maya noticed something on her windowsill—a wilted flower, and a small note written in crooked letters: "Thank you for being my friend. —Zed"

Maya smiled, learning that courage means looking past appearances, and the best friends are the ones you least expect.
