The Goldfish's Magic Pyramid
Maya had the craziest hair in her whole class—big, bouncy curls that stuck out in every direction, especially when she was excited. And today, she was VERY excited.
"Look what I found!" Maya called, rushing into the backyard where her best friend Sam was waiting. She held up an old iphone she'd discovered in her attic. "My dad says it doesn't work anymore, but watch this!"
She pressed the button, and the screen flickered to life. But instead of apps, there was a tiny goldfish swimming inside the glass! His scales shimmered like actual gold.
"Hello!" bubbled the goldfish. "I'm Finnegan! I've been waiting THREE HUNDRED years for someone to find me!"
Maya's curls practically stood on end. "A MAGIC goldfish!"
Finnegan explained that he needed help building a golden pyramid to return to his home in the sky. "Not stone," he said. "A pyramid of KIND memories!"
All afternoon, Maya and Sam collected special moments: a purple ribbon from when Maya learned to tie her shoes, a smooth stone from the beach where Sam built his first sandcastle, even a doodle they'd made together.
Each item glowed when they placed it. But something was missing—the pyramid kept collapsing!
"We need one more thing," Finnegan said sadly. "Something given freely, without expecting anything back."
Maya looked at Sam. Her wild hair was messy from running around. She remembered how Sam always shared his snacks, even when he was hungry himself.
"Wait!" Maya pulled a sparkly barrette from her hair—the one her grandmother had given her, her favorite thing. "You can have this."
Her hair tumbled free, but she didn't care.
The pyramid suddenly BLAZED with golden light! Finnegan grew until he was the size of a dolphin, then swam up through the pyramid into the sky, leaving a trail of sparkles.
"Thank you, friends," his voice echoed. "You've taught me that the best magic comes from giving with your heart."
That night, Maya's curls seemed to shimmer with golden light. And whenever she and Sam felt lonely, they'd touch their special collection, and feel warm inside—like Finnegan was still their friend, swimming through the stars.
