The Goldfish's Magic Promise
Lily found the goldfish in the tiniest puddle by the sidewalk after the storm. It sparkled like orange sunset, even though it was no bigger than her thumb.
"Please help me," the goldfish said in a voice like silver bells. "I'm far from home. The Great Pyramid in the Clouds is where I belong."
Lily's messy brown hair dripped rain as she knelt down. "But how will you get there? It's in the sky!"
"With magic," said the goldfish. "But I need something special from you. Do you have anything that remembers things?"
Lily thought hard. Then she pulled her dad's old iphone from her pocket. It was cracked and didn't make calls anymore, but she used it to draw pictures.
"This remembers my drawings," Lily said.
The goldfish's scales flashed like lightning. "Perfect! The magic inside will build us a path."
Suddenly, the iPhone screen glowed golden. Drawings Lily had made—stars, clouds, stairs—began floating into the air. They arranged themselves into a shimmering staircase that went all the way up to a floating pyramid above the clouds.
"Come!" The goldfish swam through the air as if it were water.
Lily climbed the magic stairs, her hair floating like seaweed in an ocean of wind. Higher and higher they went until they reached the Great Pyramid, which was made entirely of crystal and moonlight.
Inside, thousands of goldfish swam in starry pools.
"Thank you," her goldfish friend said. "You kept your promise to help a stranger. That's the strongest magic of all."
The goldfish gave Lily a single glowing scale. "Keep this. When you need courage, it will shine like lightning."
Lily slid down the cloud-stairs, her heart full of starlight. When she looked at the iPhone, it showed one last drawing: a girl with messy hair, a golden fish, and a pyramid floating in the sky, with the words FRIENDS written across the bottom in glitter.
Sometimes, she discovered, the best adventures begin with helping someone who needs you—even if they're only the size of a goldfish.
