The Goldfish's Lightning Wish
Maya's curly brown hair bounced wildly as she skipped through her backyard, her orange raincoat glowing like a captured sunset. The summer storm had arrived suddenly, turning the sky purple and gray. CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the clouds, followed by thunder that rumbled like a giant's tummy.
Something shimmering caught Maya's eye near the old pond. She crept closer, her rainboots squelching in the mud. There, floating in the rain-rippled water, was the most beautiful goldfish she had ever seen—its scales were not just golden, but sparkled with tiny lightning bolts trapped inside.
"You woke me!" said a bubbly voice.
Maya jumped. "Who said that?"
"Down here!" The goldfish swam to the surface, its fins waving like tiny silk flags. "I'm a magical fish. Lightning strikes wake me from my hundred-year sleep. I've been sleeping since before your grandmother was born."
Maya's eyes widened. "You're magic? Really?"
"Really and truly." The goldfish did a somersault in the water. "For freeing me with that lightning bolt, I'll grant you one wish. Anything your heart desires."
Maya thought about her lonely days since moving to the new house, her wild hair that other children made fun of, how she wished every night for someone who would understand her.
"I wish for a true friend," she said softly. "Someone who will stay by my side forever and never leave."
The goldfish's scales glowed brighter than any lightning, brighter than the sun, brighter than all the stars in the sky. "A friendship wish! The very best kind."
POOF! In a burst of golden sparkles, a fluffy golden puppy appeared on the grass beside her, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled like jello.
"I'm Spark!" the puppy barked happily, nuzzling Maya's hand with his warm, wet nose.
From that day on, Maya was never lonely. When lightning storms came, she and Spark would dance in the rain, her curly hair flowing free, her orange coat shining, knowing that sometimes the brightest wishes come from the most surprising places. And somewhere in the pond, the magical goldfish smiled, waiting for the next lightning bolt to bring magic to another lonely heart.
The greatest magic of all wasn't the lightning or the wish—it was finding a friend who would stay forever.
