The Goldfish's Lightning Wish
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden, especially the small pond where tiny orange fish darted between lily pads. One afternoon, as she sat beneath the swaying palm tree, something magical happened.
The largest goldfish, whom Lily'd named Goldie, swam right to the edge and spoke! "Lily, I need your help. The Sphinx of Dreams has lost her magic, and without it, all wishes will fade forever."
Lily's eyes widened. "How can I help?"
"You're pure of heart and full of imagination. Only you can restore her magic." Goldie explained that Lily needed to find the magical oranges growing in the garden's oldest tree and present them to the Sphinx at exactly the right moment.
Lily searched the garden until she found the ancient tree with branches twisted like sleepy cats. High in its leaves hung three glowing oranges. She carefully gathered them, their warm light making her fingers tingle.
As the sun began to set, storm clouds gathered. Thunder rumbled like a hungry giant's tummy. Goldie appeared again. "Now! The Sphinx awaits!"
Lily rushed to the garden's stone fountain, where a small Sphinx statue sat surrounded by twinkling fireflies. She placed the glowing oranges at its base.
CRACK! Lightning struck nearby, and for a moment, everything turned brilliant white. When Lily could see again, the Sphinx was no longer stone. She stretched her stone wings and smiled.
"Thank you, brave child," the Sphinx said, her voice like wind through chimes. "Your courage and kindness have restored my magic. Now, what is your heart's deepest wish?"
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—to fly, to be a princess, for endless candy. But she looked at Goldie swimming happily in the pond and at the beautiful garden that had given her this adventure.
"I wish that Goldie could see the world beyond this pond," Lily said. "Everyone deserves to have adventures."
The Sphinx nodded, her eyes shining with wisdom. "A wish that helps others is the most powerful magic of all."
She touched her paw to the water, and Goldie transformed! No longer just a fish, Goldie grew wings that shimmered like sunlight on water. Now Goldie could fly through the garden and see the whole world, but always returned to swim with Lily and share stories of faraway places.
And sometimes, on stormy afternoons, you can still see them together—Lily beneath the palm tree, listening to Goldie's tales while lightning dances in the sky, reminding everyone that the best wishes are the ones that help others.
