The Goldfish's Lightning Pitch
Emma pressed her hand against the cool glass of the fish bowl. Her goldfish, Finley, swam over and bubbled at her. Emma giggled. It almost looked like Finley was trying to say something!
That afternoon, Emma was playing baseball in her backyard when the sky turned dark gray. CRACK! Lightning flashed across the clouds like glitter spilled on black paper. Rain poured down in silver sheets.
"Come inside!" her mother called.
Emma grabbed her baseball and ran to her room, where Finny was swimming in slow, sad circles. Emma pressed her palm against the glass again.
"I wish you could play baseball with me, Finny," she whispered.
Suddenly, the room filled with golden light. Emma's palm began to glow—first warm yellow, then bright white, like captured sunshine. Finny swam faster and faster, creating a tiny whirlpool in his bowl.
WHOOSH!
Finny leaped right out of the water! But he didn't flop on the floor. Instead, he floated inside a magical bubble of water that hovered beside Emma.
"You're magic!" Emma gasped.
Finny眨ed his shiny eyes. In Emma's mind, she heard his voice like tiny bells: *And you are too, Emma. Your glowing palm created our friendship bridge!*
They went outside where the rain had stopped. The grass sparkled with droplets that looked like diamonds. Emma tossed her baseball, and Finny's water-bubble zoomed after it, knocking it into the air with a splashy WHOOSH.
They played magical baseball until sunset, Finny diving and spinning in his bubble while Emma laughed and caught every ball. When twilight painted the sky purple, Finny floated back into his bowl.
"Will we play again?" Emma asked, pressing her palm to the glass.
*Whenever you wish it,* Finny's bell-voice echoed in her heart. *That's the magic of friendship—it's always there when you need it.*
Emma smiled, her palm still tingling with golden warmth. Some adventures, she realized, come in the smallest, splashiest packages.
