The Goldfish's Grand Slam

Leo loved summer days, especially when he could play baseball in his backyard. The sun shone bright as he gripped his favorite bat—a smooth wooden one his grandpa had given him.

"One more pitch!" Leo called out to his imaginary pitcher.

He swung with all his might. *CRACK!* The baseball soared through the air, higher and higher, until—SPLASH! It landed right in the middle of the swimming pool.

Leo ran to the edge and peered into the blue water. Something shimmered beneath the ripples. A tiny goldfish, glowing like a tiny piece of sunshine, swam up to the floating baseball.

"Hello there!" the goldfish spoke in a bubbly voice.

Leo's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"I'm Gilbert," said the goldfish, flicking his golden tail. "I've been waiting for someone to hit a ball into my pool. It happens only once every hundred years!"

Gilbert swam around the baseball. "Because of your amazing hit, I can grant you one wish. What would your heart desire?"

Leo thought hard. He could wish for endless ice cream, or a robot that did his homework, or to become a famous baseball player. But then he remembered the lonely boy next door who never had anyone to play with.

"I wish," Leo said slowly, "for my friend Mia to have the best summer ever. She just moved here and doesn't know anyone yet."

Gilbert's scales sparkled brighter than ever. "That's the most wonderful wish I've ever heard!"

The pool water began to swirl with rainbow colors. When the ripples settled, Leo noticed something shiny on the pool's edge—two golden tickets to the town carnival.

Mia became Leo's best friend that summer. They played baseball, swam in the pool, and sometimes Leo thought he saw a flash of gold beneath the water's surface, reminding him that the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
