The Goldfish's Golden Riddle
Leo loved his goldfish, Goldie, but he had no idea she could talk. Until one Tuesday, when he was eating breakfast and Goldie swam to the front of her bowl and said, "Leo, your baseball glove is glowing."
Leo dropped his spoon. His messy hair stood straight up. "You can talk?"
"Only when there's magic afoot," Goldie said. "And something magical is happening in your bedroom. Your baseball glove is glowing because it's been chosen."
"Chosen for what?" Leo asked, rushing to his room.
Goldie's bowl magically floated beside him. "To solve the Sphinx's riddle, of course. The Great Sphinx appears only once every hundred years, and she's waiting for you in the park."
Leo grabbed his glowing glove and ran to the park, Goldie floating beside him. In the middle of the playground stood the Sphinx — a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman.
"Young Leo," the Sphinx rumbled, "I have guarded an ancient secret for millennia. Answer my riddle, and you shall receive a gift that will change your world forever."
Leo's iphone suddenly buzzed in his pocket. When he pulled it out, it showed a picture of his grandmother, who had passed away last year.
The Sphinx spoke her riddle: "I have a face but no eyes, hands but no arms, and I hold memories but no mind. What am I?"
Leo looked at his phone, then at Goldie, then at his baseball glove. He thought about how Goldie held his secrets, how his glove held his dreams of playing catch with his grandpa, how his phone held the photos of people he loved.
"A treasure box!" Leo said. "But not just any treasure box — a heart!"
The Sphinx smiled, and golden light poured from her eyes. "Correct, young one. Your heart is full of love, and that is the greatest treasure of all."
She pressed her paw against Leo's chest, and suddenly he could hear Goldie's thoughts, feel his grandmother's love, and understand that the magic had been inside him all along.
"Your phone is just a tool," the Sphinx whispered, disappearing like mist. "But your heart — that will connect you to everyone you love, forever."
That night, Leo fell asleep with Goldie's bowl beside his bed, knowing that some magic doesn't need batteries, just love and a brave heart willing to believe.
