The Goldfish Rescue Mission
Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, she woke up on homecoming morning looking like a traffic cone. Apparently, "Sunset Orange" and "Caramel Dream" boxes looked way too similar at 11 PM during her panic-induced DIY dye job.
"You look like a Gryffindor who ate a highlighter," her little brother Leo observed, shoving cereal into his mouth.
Maya flipped him off and grabbed her dad's old fishing hat – the one with the ridiculous bass patch that smelled like river water and questionable choices. It wasn't exactly homecoming queen material, but neither was her hair, which currently glowed like radioactive Halloween candy.
She was fully prepared to spend the entire night in the bathroom when her phone buzzed. Jason. The Jason who'd sat behind her in bio since September and had never once noticed she existed.
"Hey, you going to Jordan's party tonight?"
Maya stared at the screen. This was it. Her moment. And she was wearing a hat that belonged on a 50-year-old fisherman.
"Yeah!" she texted back, hands shaking. "You?"
"Heck yeah. Hey, quick weird favor – can you stop by Petco on your way? My sister's goldfish is dying and I need medicine or whatever.
Maya's heart did something genuinely concerning. Jason. His goldfish. An emergency.
"On it," she replied, already grabbing her keys.
Two hours later, she stood in Jordan's crowded kitchen wearing her dad's fishing hat, clutching a bottle of fish antibiotics, while Leo's escaped goldfish – which Maya had somehow agreed to fish-sit – swam happily in a mason jar on the counter. Her orange hair was partially visible under the hat's brim.
"Is that... a goldfish?" Jason asked, appearing beside her. His eyes landed on her hair peeking out. "And is your hair... orange?"
Maya considered faking a seizure right there.
"DIY disaster," she admitted. "And yes, this is Leo's fish. He's my plus one."
Jason stared at her for what felt like seventeen years. Then he burst out laughing – not mean laughing, but the kind where his eyes crinkled and he had to lean against the counter.
"That's honestly the most metal thing I've ever heard," he said. "Wear the hat. It's a vibe."
They spent the rest of the night making up increasingly elaborate backstories about the goldfish (his name was definitely Captain Finneas, and he'd survived three near-death experiences involving a cat and a vacuum cleaner). Maya's hair remained hidden under the ridiculous hat, but somehow, nobody seemed to care.
Maybe being perfectly put together wasn't the point. Maybe the right person would think your disaster was a vibe, goldfish emergencies and all.
Besides, Captain Finneas had never looked healthier.
