The Goldfish Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the empty fishbowl on her nightstand, RIP JERRY written in sharpie on the glass. Her fourth goldfish this semester. The girl at PetSmart had given her the side-eye when she bought another one, like she was some kind of serial fish killer. But Jerry's death wasn't her fault this time—probably.

"You okay?" her best friend Chloe asked through FaceTime. "You look like a zombie."

"Three hours of sleep," Maya groveled, rubbing her eyes. "History project due tomorrow, and Jordan's group keeps texting me at 2 AM asking for help. Like, no, I'm not doing your entire presentation again."

The social pyramid at Westwood High was brutal. Seniors like Jordan at the top, everyone else scrambling somewhere below. Maya had learned the hard way that being the smart kid meant being everyone's academic zombie—stumbling through each school day, brain half-eaten, doing other people's work while they lived their best lives.

"Okay, hear me out," Chloe said, eyes widening. "What if we started a pyramid scheme?"

"A pyramid scheme?"

"No, listen—not like, illegal. More like... a service. We do homework for cash, then recruit other people to do homework, we take a cut..."

"Chloe. That IS a pyramid scheme."

"But educational!" Chloe insisted. "Think about it. You're already doing half the junior class's work. Why not get paid?"

Maya stared at her new goldfish, whom she'd dramatically named Phoenix. The tiny orange fish swam in endless circles, trapped in his glass prison. Just like her, honestly.

"Phoenix understands," Maya said. "Look at him. He's living my truth."

"Your fish has a three-second memory and barely understands he's in a bowl."

"Exactly. That's my brain right now."

They both cracked up, and something shifted. Maya realized she was done being the academic zombie. Let Jordan fail his own history project. Let the pyramid collapse on itself. She had more important things to worry about.

Like keeping Phoenix alive past Friday.

"You know what?" Maya said. "No more. Starting today, I quit the pyramid."

"Preach."

They spent the rest of the night making memes about the social hierarchy instead of doing other people's homework. Phoenix swam happily, oblivious to the revolution he'd inspired.
