The Goldfish Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at the cable box, watching the same reality show for the third time that night. Her phone buzzed — another text from Jordan about their "revolutionary" new business venture.

"You coming to the meeting?" Jordan had asked in the cafeteria earlier. "It's literally gonna change everything. We're gonna be rich before graduation."

Maya had rolled her eyes. Jordan's get-rich-quick schemes were legendary: the sneaker reselling fiasco (lost $200), the energy drink hustle (expired stock), and now whatever this was.

The abandoned water tower behind the school was their meeting spot. Maya climbed the rusted ladder, finding Jordan already there, sitting cross-legged on the concrete platform with a glass bowl containing a solitary goldfish.

"Meet Bubbles," Jordan said solemnly. "And the future."

"Please tell me this isn't another pet-sitting service."

"No, listen. It's a pyramid — but like, a GOOD pyramid. You buy a goldfish, you sell two friends on buying goldfish, they each sell two friends... everyone's making money, everyone's happy. It's foolproof."

Maya stared. Jordan was serious. "You want me to sell goldfish to people? That's your master plan?"

"It's about COMMUNITY, Maya. Building something. We're not just zombies scrolling through phones all day — we're DOING something."

The sun set over the town, and for a moment, Maya almost believed them. Almost.

"This is literally a pyramid scheme, Jordan. Like, the exact definition."

"It's about PASSIVE INCOME. Think about college —"

"I'm not doing this." Maya stood up. "And you shouldn't either. You're gonna get people to spend money on fish they don't want, and then what?"

Jordan's face fell. "I just... I don't want to work at my dad's car shop all summer. I wanted something of my own."

The vulnerability hit Maya harder than any sales pitch could have. Jordan wasn't trying to scam people — they were scared of ending up stuck, like everyone else in their town who never left.

Maya sat back down. "Okay. First, we're not doing a pyramid scheme. But maybe we can figure something else out. Together."

Bubbles the goldfish swam in lazy circles, completely unaware that he'd just saved two teenagers from making a terrible mistake.

"Together?" Jordan asked, hope creeping back into their voice.

"Together. But we're gonna need a better plan than goldfish."
