The Goldfish Pyramid Conspiracy
Maya's hair decided to betray her on the worst possible day—picture day, naturally. She'd spent forty-five minutes attempting to tame her curls into something resembling order, but humidity had other plans. By third period, she looked like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket.
"Dude, your hair is literally achieving new levels of chaos," said Jordan, sliding into the seat beside her. "It's giving mad scientist energy."
Maya groaned, letting her forehead hit the desk. "This is it. This is my legacy. The girl whose hair defies the laws of physics."
But hair drama was nothing compared to what waited in Mr. Henderson's history class. The group project announcement landed like a bomb: ancient Egypt presentations, due Monday. And because the universe had a twisted sense of humor, Maya got paired with Alex—the quiet girl who sat in the back, the one everyone whispered about because she'd once worn a sweater featuring a screen-printed goldfish for two weeks straight.
"We should do something about the Sphinx," Alex said, her voice barely above a whisper. "There's theories about secret chambers beneath it. Like, what if they're hiding something?"
Maya blinked. This was the most she'd ever heard Alex say. "You mean like a hidden pyramid underneath?"
"Or worse." Alex's eyes actually gleamed. "Or better."
They spent Saturday at Alex's house, which smelled like vanilla and old books. Maya learned that Alex didn't just randomly like goldfish—she'd had one named Plato who lived for seven years and supposedly understood Greek. She learned that Alex collected conspiracy theories like some people collected Pokemon cards. She learned that the quiet girl in the back of the classroom was actually hilarious.
"What if the Sphinx is an ancient alien monitoring device?" Alex suggested, dumping glitter onto their poster board. "That's why it's facing the sunrise. It's waiting for their signal."
Maya laughed so hard she knocked over the glitter. "You're actually unhinged. I love it."
When they presented on Monday, Mr. Henderson actually stopped checking his watch. Alex's voice grew stronger with each slide, and Maya found herself feeding off that energy. They ended with a dramatic pose in front of their glitter-covered Sphinx poster.
"Best presentation all year," Jordan told Maya afterward. "You and Alex are low-key iconic together."
And Maya realized something as she caught Alex's smile across the room: sometimes the best friendships aren't the ones you plan for. Sometimes they're the ones that find you when your hair is a disaster and you least expect them.
She definitely needed to ask about getting a goldfish, though.
