The Goldfish Protocol

The bass from Marcus's speakers shook the entire house, but Maya was too busy RUNNING mental math to care. Seven solo cups of ORANGEtini between her and Jordan — her crush since seventh grade orientation — and she'd already spilled half of them while trying to look casual and not like she was internally screaming.

"Just grabbing more cups! BRB!" Maya called, speed-walking toward what she hoped was the kitchen and not a closet.

Instead, she found a GOLDFISH on the counter. A real, live, swimming-in-a-cloudy-bowl GOLDFISH that was definitely not supposed to be at a high school house party.

"What are YOU doing here?" Maya whispered, leaning in closer like they were co-conspirators.

The fish gave her a side-eye that said, "Do I LOOK like I volunteered for this?"

"Talking to pets at parties now?" Jordan's voice behind her made her literally jump. "That's... honestly kinda awesome."

Maya spun around. Jordan was smiling. AT her. Not awkward-smiling, but like she was actually interesting. Like she was worth talking to.

"His name is Fin," Maya heard herself say, RUNNING on pure adrenaline and whatever confidence she'd found in that kitchen. "And I'm RUNNING a rescue mission. His water is basically toxic waste."

Jordan nodded like this was the most normal conversation ever. "Wanna sneak him onto the back porch? I know where Marcus keeps the clean hose water."

And just like that — RUNNING through a stranger's backyard at midnight with a GOLDFISH in a solo cup while Jordan held the flashlight and they both tried not to laugh too loud — Maya wasn't the awkward new girl anymore. She was someone worth staying up past curfew for, someone worth sharing secrets with, someone worth texting until 3 AM about everything and nothing.

All because of an ORANGEtini disaster and a fish who desperately needed better living conditions.

Sometimes the best nights start with the weirdest moments. That's just high school, right?
