The Goldfish Protocol

I stood by the snack table at Tyler's party, nursing a lukewarm soda like it was my job. Again. My beanie was pulled low—my safety hat, the one I never took off because I was terrified someone might see the real me.

'She's literally standing there like a goldfish in a bowl,' Chloe whispered to her squad, not even bothering to lower her voice. 'Just observing everyone. It's giving serial killer energy.'

My cheeks burned. I WAS observing, okay? But not because I was creepy. Because I was lowkey terrified of saying the wrong thing, wearing the wrong thing, being the wrong thing. Middle school had been a breeze, but freshman year had hit different. The social hierarchy at Northwood High made zero sense, and I felt like I was constantly bearing witness to everyone else's lives while my own happened in fast-forward without me.

Then Marcus—THE Marcus, varsity basketball guy who'd sat behind me in bio since September—actually walked over. My heart did this weird gymnastics routine.

'Hey,' he said, nodding at my hat. 'Nice beanie. You wear that every day, right?'

I panicked. 'Yeah, it's... it's a bear. On the inside. Like, there's a bear pattern. Long story.'

WHAT. Why did I say that?

Marcus smiled, and it wasn't the scary I'm-better-than-you smile I'd expected. 'That's actually kind of awesome. My little sister has this thing about bears. She thinks they're, like, misunderstood.'

We talked for twenty minutes. About bio, about how much both of us hated group projects, about his sister's weird obsession with nature documentaries. My anxiety dialed down from screaming emergency to manageable background buzz.

Later, I'd learn that Chloe had been live-tweeting my 'goldfish moment' on finsta. Whatever. Some things never change. But for the first time in months, I didn't feel like I was spying on my own life from the outside. I was just... living it.

Hat and all.
