The Goldfish Prophecy

Maya's iPhone buzzed with another notification. She pressed the lock button again—third time in five minutes. Her best friend Chloe was running late, leaving Maya alone at Tyler's party, clutching a red plastic cup like it contained the elixir of life instead of lukewarm soda.

The anxiety of being the new girl still hadn't faded. Three months into sophomore year, and Maya still felt like she was performing the role of "confident teenager" without actually knowing the lines.

Across the room, people gathered around something unexpected—a sphinx statue covered in neon LED strips. Tyler's older brother had built it for some art school project, and now it dominated the basement like a glowing monument to weirdness.

"Five bucks for the Oracle," Tyler announced, gesturing to the sphinx's open mouth. "Ask it anything, and the Great Sphinx shall answer."

Maya rolled her eyes but moved closer. Anything was better than standing alone by the snack table, pretending to be fascinated by a bag of chips.

"I'll do it," declared Marcus, the soccer captain who'd been sitting next to her in homeroom since August. He approached with exaggerated confidence, stuffing a five-dollar bill into the sphinx's mouth. "Oracle, will I ask Maya to homecoming?"

Maya's stomach did that annoying fluttery thing it always did when Marcus looked at her.

The sphinx remained silent for dramatic effect until Tyler's voice echoed from behind it: "THE ORACLE SPEAKS IN RIDDLES, YOUTH. PRESENT YOUR WORTHY OFFERING."

Everyone laughed, but Marcus didn't back down. "What offering? I gave you five bucks."

"A TRUE OFFERING," Tyler intoned.

The group started chanting suggestions. Maya found herself smiling despite the embarrassment. Marcus was genuinely trying, in front of everyone, which was either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid.

Then her phone dinged. Chloe: "Stuck in traffic, bear with me!!! 🐻💕"

The timing made Maya snort out loud, and suddenly she wasn't the new girl anymore. She was just Maya, standing in a basement with a ridiculous sphinx and a boy who might actually like her.

"FINE," Tyler's voice boomed from behind the sphinx. "THE ORACLE ACCEPTS THIS OFFERING."

The sphinx's eyes flickered dramatically, and a single goldfish dropped from its mouth, landing in Marcus's outstretched hand.

"Dude, seriously?" Marcus stared at the orange fish, flopping slightly in his palm. "Is this a yes or no?"

"The Oracle has spoken," Tyler pronounced solemnly, then cracked up. "That's your answer, bro. You now have custody of Gerald. The prophecy is complete."

The group exploded with laughter. Marcus looked at the goldfish, then at Maya, then back at the fish. "So... is that a yes?"

Maya finally laughed, releasing tension she hadn't realized she'd been holding all evening. "That depends. Are you going to name it Gerald?"

"I was thinking more like... Fin?"

"Fin works."

"Then yes, that's a yes."

The goldfish flopped in Marcus's hand. The sphinx glowed neon blue. And somewhere in the chaos of a basement party, Maya finally felt like she might actually belong.
