The Goldfish Prince's Secret
Lily's pet goldfish, Finny, wasn't ordinary. One Tuesday, while she was feeding him, he popped to the surface and spoke.
"Lily, I'm actually a prince from the Crystal Kingdom, trapped by the grumpy Sphinx who lives in your basement!"
Lily's eyes went wide. "But how?"
"That old TV cable your dad keeps meaning to fix? It's not really a cable. It's a magical tunnel connecting your house to my kingdom! The Sphinx guards it. Only someone with a pure heart can pass through."
Lily knelt by the fishbowl. "What can I do to help?"
Finny did a little flip. "In the Sphinx's cave, there's a special golden vitamin. It looks like a tiny glowing pill. If you swallow it, you'll shrink small enough to swim through the cable-tunnel and break the spell!"
That night, while her parents slept, Lily crept to the basement. There, behind boxes of old toys, sat a tiny Sphinx carved from stone—but its eyes were glowing!
"Answer my riddle, child," the Sphinx rumbled, "or stay forever small."
Lily took a deep breath. "I'm ready!"
"What has gills but cannot breathe water? What has fins but cannot swim? What speaks but has no mouth?"
Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A prince trapped in a goldfish's body!"
The Sphinx nodded approvingly. "Clever child. Here is the golden vitamin." It pushed forward a pill that shimmered like captured sunshine.
Lily swallowed it. Whoosh! She shrank to the size of a thumb. She dived into the cable, sliding through darkness until—splash!—she landed in a crystal pond.
Finny appeared beside her, but now he was a boy with orange hair and shimmering silver eyes.
"You did it!" he cheered, hugging her. "The spell is broken!"
The Sphinx appeared, smiling. "True friendship is the strongest magic of all."
Lily grew back to her normal size, and Finny became her new best friend—though sometimes, just for fun, they'd both take the golden vitamin and swim through the cable-tunnel together, visiting the Crystal Kingdom where magic was real and friendship could break any spell.
And every morning, Lily made sure to take her regular vitamins too, because she'd learned: you never know when you might need a little magic.
