The Goldfish Party Incident
I wasn't supposed to be at Tyler's party. I was supposed to be watching my neighbor's goldfish while they were out of town. But somehow I found myself standing on Tyler's front porch, clutching a plastic bowl with fins inside, wearing my lucky beanie because my hair was doing that weird frizzy thing it does when I'm nervous.
My best friend Sarah practically dragged me there. "You're not spending another Friday night watching TikToks in your room," she'd said, all determined energy like she was on a mission.
But Sarah had been in zombie mode all week—staying up until 3 AM playing some survival game—and I could tell she was running on caffeine and pure stubbornness.
Inside, Tyler's house was packed. People I barely recognized from school were everywhere. The bass from some rap song shook the floor. I pressed myself against a wall, feeling like the most awkward person ever.
Then Tyler's dog—a chaotic golden retriever named Brody—came barreling through the crowd, knocked into me, and suddenly the goldfish bowl was flying through the air.
Time seemed to slow down. I watched the bowl spin toward what I realized too late was a very expensive-looking hat sitting on a table. Some girl's designer beanie thing.
CRASH. Water everywhere. Goldfish flopping on the table. And a very wet, very ruined hat.
The room went silent. I wanted to die.
But then someone started laughing. It was the girl whose hat I'd destroyed. She was cracking up, and suddenly everyone was laughing, and Tyler was like, "Brody! You chaotic legend!" blaming the dog like it wasn't my fault.
Sarah leaned over and whispered, "See? That's the most memorable thing that's happened at any party all year."
And somehow, weirdly, she was right. The goldfish survived (we found him a new bowl in the kitchen). The girl with the hat—her name was Maya—ended up being super cool about it. And I made like five new friends who thought my goldfish-plus-hat disaster was the most entertaining thing ever.
Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes you just gotta let a chaotic dog ruin a designer hat to find your people.
