The Goldfish Operation

Maya stared at her reflection, wanting to scream. The hair dye box promised "caramel highlights" but delivered "strawberry disaster." Her mom would flip. But worse—this was the night of Jackson's party, the social event of the season. At the bottom of the school's popularity pyramid, Maya had finally scored an invite. Now she looked like a confused pumpkin.

"Whatever," she muttered, grabbing her backpack. "Fingers crossed nobody notices."

Jackson's house already thumped with bass when she arrived. Maya ducked into the kitchen to hide, accidentally knocking a phone off the counter. An iPhone 15 Pro Max. The screen lit up with texts from someone named "Goldfish_gurl92" about something called "The Pyramid."

Maya's thumb hovered. She shouldn't look. But the curiosity burned.

*"You sure nobody suspects? This could ruin everything if they find out."*

*"Chill. Nobody questions the popular kids. We're literally at the top of the pyramid for a reason."*

Maya's heart raced. She'd become a spy without meaning to. Who were these people? What was "The Pyramid"?

"Hey! That's my phone!"

Maya jumped. It was Chloe—the Chloe. Captain of the dance team, future homecoming queen, the girl who'd accidentally sat next to Maya in bio and never spoken a word.

"Sorry," Maya squeaked. "You dropped it."

Chloe snatched it back, then froze. She examined Maya's hair. "Did you... dye it?"

Maya's face burned. "Disaster, right?"

"No." Chloe's eyes widened. "It's kind of amazing. Actually, I've been wanting to try something like that but my mom would kill me. What brand?"

Wait. WHAT?

"Target boxed dye," Maya admitted. "Total failure."

"It's not a failure," Chloe insisted. "Look, I need to ask you something. How much did you see?"

"Nothing! I swear!"

Chloe bit her lip. "Okay. Here's the thing. 'The Pyramid' isn't some evil scheme. It's my fish's recovery tank. Goldfish_gurl92 is my little sister, and we've been secretly nursing this sick goldfish back to health because our parents think it's already dead and flushed it. We're not supposed to have pets."

Maya stared. Then she burst out laughing. "That's the big secret? A zombie fish?"

"Shh!" Chloe dragged her to the laundry room where a filtered tank sat in the corner. Inside, a goldfish swam lazily. "His name is Pyramid. Because he's triangular-shaped. We're basically running an underground fish hospital."

Maya giggled. "I'm literally snooping through your texts because I'm having a hair crisis, and you're hiding a triangular fish from your parents."

"Yeah." Chloe smiled. "Wanna be friends? We can exchange hair dye tips. And you can help me with Pyramid's water changes."

"Only if you teach me that TikTok dance you did at the game."

"Deal."

Maya left the party with Chloe's number in her contacts and a new perspective on the popularity pyramid. Sometimes the people at the top were just regular people hiding goldfish in laundry rooms. And sometimes? Sometimes a strawberry hair disaster was exactly what you needed to find your people.
