The Goldfish on the Telephone Wire
After the big summer storm, Lily looked out her window and saw something amazing. High on the telephone cable, a shimmering bubble of water swayed in the breeze. Inside, a tiny goldfish swam in circles!
Lily ran outside and climbed the garden fence for a closer look. "How did you get up there?" she whispered.
The goldfish pressed against its bubble. "A gust of wind lifted my pond right up!" a tiny voice chimed. "I'm Finnegan, and I'm terribly far from home."
Lily's heart went out to the stranded fish. "I'll help you!" she promised.
Just then, Barnaby the bull ambled over from the neighboring farm. His massive horns looked scary, but his eyes were kind and gentle. "What's the matter, little ones?" he rumbled softly.
Lily explained about Finnegan. Barnaby nodded wisely. "Climb onto my back, little girl. And you, fishy—pop into my water bucket here."
Carefully, Finnegan slipped from his magical bubble into the bucket. Lily scrambled onto Barnaby's broad back, clutching his golden-orange collar.
"Hold tight!" Barnaby said, and set off toward the distant creek where Finnegan lived.
Along the way, they shared lunch. Lily peeled an orange, its citrus scent bright in the sunny air. She saved the juiciest slice for Finnegan, who did a happy flip in his bucket.
When they reached the creek, Finnegan swam home joyfully. "Thank you both!" he called. "Friends who help each other are the real magic!"
Lily hugged Barnaby's warm neck. She learned that day that help comes in unexpected sizes—and that kindness, like water, flows wherever it's needed most.
