The Goldfish Monologues

Maya stared at the goldfish bowl on her dresser, watching Bubbles swim in endless circles. It was basically her life right now—stuck in the same patterns, going nowhere while everyone else seemed to be getting somewhere.

"You're overthinking it again," said Jordan, her best friend since kindergarten, currently sprawled across her bed scrolling through TikTok. "It's just homecoming, not a Supreme Court case."

"Easy for you to say," Maya muttered. "You're not the one who accidentally agreed to go with the human equivalent of a golden retriever."

Okay, that was harsh. Tyler wasn't terrible—he was sweet, funny, and had that whole skater-boy vibe going on. But Maya's crush on practically-his-twin Lucas had been noted by approximately everyone in their grade, making the whole Tyler situation...

awkward.

"He asked you first," Jordan pointed out, as if the universe operated on some kind of first-come-first-served basis. "That's got to count for something."

Maya's cat, Midnight, chose that moment to jump onto the windowsill and knock over three carefully arranged succulents.

"Thanks for the input, Midnight," Maya sighed. "At least someone gets it."

Her phone buzzed. Tyler: *Running late to practice but I'll walk you home after school?*

Jordan peeked over. "See? He's not a cat person—he's trying."

"What does that even mean?"

"Cats make you work for it. Dogs? They're just happy you exist." Jordan sat up. "Look, I'm not saying you have to marry the guy. But maybe, just maybe, the universe isn't playing some cruel joke on you. Maybe you're supposed to figure out that the guy who actually shows up matters more than the one in your head."

Maya looked at Bubbles, still swimming his loops. Was Jordan right? Was she so caught up in her idea of how things should be that she couldn't see what was actually in front of her?

"There's also the fact," Jordan added casually, "that I heard Lucas's ex is transferring back."

Maya froze. "Wait, what?"

"Just saying. The whole bear situation—"

"BEAR situation?"

"As in, you know what you're getting with a puppy. But some people? They're wild animals. You think you can tame them, but..." Jordan shrugged. "Anyway, I gotta bounce. History test."

After Jordan left, Maya sat with her thoughts. The goldfish kept swimming. The cat fell asleep. Her phone showed Tyler's message, still unanswered.

And suddenly it clicked. Maybe growing up wasn't about figuring out who you were supposed to want. Maybe it was about figuring out what you actually needed.

She texted back: *Yes please :)*

The cat opened one eye, as if in approval. The goldfish did a little flip. And Maya's life, finally, felt like it was moving forward.
