The Goldfish Mission
Maya's hair frizzed in the humidity as she crouched behind the cafeteria trash cans, phone clutched in her sweating palm. Being a wannabe spy wasn't exactly how she'd pictured her freshman year, but desperate times called for desperate measures.
"Psst. Clear." Her best friend Riley whispered through their earbuds. "Target approaching. Bull incoming at three o'clock."
That's what they called Jordan—the bull of the hallway, the reason Maya's Instagram stories were suddenly 87% less cringe. Jordan had been making Maya's life miserable since September, and today was finally Maya's chance to expose them.
Except Jordan wasn't headed toward the cafeteria. They were veering toward the pet store.
Maya's heart thumped. Was Jordan plotting something? Buying supplies for some sinister act? She tightened her ponytail and followed, staying three steps behind, casual, totally not suspicious.
Inside, Jordan stopped at the fish tanks. They stared at a solitary goldfish with the weirdest look Maya had ever seen—not mean, just... kinda soft?
"Can I help you?" the store clerk asked.
"Yeah, my dog keeps staring at empty fish bowls and it's making me sad," Jordan said. "I need a goldfish. Like, one that won't die in two days because I'm emotionally fragile and can't handle that right now."
Maya nearly dropped her phone.
Jordan—the bull, the nemesis, the reason Maya existed in a constant state of low-key panic—was out here buying a goldfish because their DOG was lonely?
Jordan turned and spotted Maya. They flinched, then their expression shifted. "Were you... spying on me?"
Heat rushed to Maya's cheeks. "No. I was—"
"It's fine," Jordan sighed. "My goldfish died last week. I've been coming here every day trying to work up the nerve to get another one. My dog keeps looking at me like I failed him."
The bull wasn't a bull. They were just some kid dealing with dead pets and sad dogs.
"I know a thing about goldfish," Maya found herself saying. "My cousin's like, a fish expert. There's this special food—"
Jordan's eyes lit up. "For real?"
"Yeah."
They walked out together, Jordan clutching a fish bag like it was made of glass, Maya mentally rewriting every assumption she'd ever made.
"Wanna come see the dog?" Jordan asked. "He's weirdly fluffy."
Maya smiled. "Bet."
Her hair was still frizzy. Jordan was still complicated. But sometimes the most unexpected missions are the ones that change everything.
