The Goldfish Incident
Maya's hands trembled as she adjusted the ridiculous neon orange bucket hat her cousin dared her to wear. Why did she agree to this? The hat screamed "look at me" when she spent freshman year perfecting the art of blending into the background. But tonight, different Maya was emerging. Or at least trying to.
The house party thumped with bass she could feel in her chest. Someone handed her a mysterious orange punch that glowed under blacklights. Her first real party. Her first time not being the designated wallflower.
Then she saw him – Ethan, from her AP Chem class, leaning against the back wall. He'd caught her stealing glances all semester. Tonight felt different. Liquid courage and the stupid hat gave her something like confidence.
She made her way over, dodging couples making out in corners. But disaster struck.
A guy stumbled backward from a beer pong table, crashing into a decorative bowl. Its contents scattered everywhere – actual goldfish flopping helplessly on the sticky floor.
Maya froze. These weren't decoration fish. Someone's pet project gone wrong.
Ethan was suddenly beside her, kneeling. "Help me catch them before they –"
A freshman stepped on one. The room went dead silent.
"OH MY GOD, WHO BROUGHT ACTUAL FISH?" someone screamed.
Maya and Ethan locked eyes. Something shifted. His face mirrored her horrified recognition – this party was actually tragic. He grabbed a Solo cup, she grabbed another, and they began the weirdest rescue mission of their lives.
"I've got one," he whispered, sliding a fish into her cup.
Their fingers brushed. Electric.
"Nice hat," he said, actually smiling now.
She laughed – genuine, head-thrown-back laughter. "Don't ask."
They saved three fish total. Later, they sat on the front porch, the orange cup between them, watching the fish swim in circles. The stupid hat suddenly felt perfect.
"Same time next week?" he asked. "For the fish."
"For the fish," she agreed.
The hat stayed on all night.
