The Goldfish Incident
Maya's stomach did backflips as she stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her vitamin water like a lifeline. The annual summer bash at Tyler's house was basically the social event of the season, and she'd spent two hours straightening her hair for this moment.
Then she saw them: the popular crew, gathered like a human pyramid near the diving board. Tyler was at the bottom, flexing. Naturally.
"You going in or what?" called Jenna, whose Instagram stories were basically mythology at this point.
"Yeah, just... hydrating," Maya lied, gesturing with her vitamin-enhanced water. Because admitting she was terrified of looking uncool while swimming in front of her crush would be social suicide.
The pool's resident goldfish—a literal orange carp named Chad that Tyler's mom insisted brought good luck—swam past, looking judgmental. Even the fish had more confidence than her.
Then it happened. Tyler bull-rushed toward her, that classic jock move where someone thinks launching themselves at a 'hesitant' swimmer is help.
"Incoming!" Tyler yelled, mid-air, grin wide.
Maya yelped, stumbled backward, and unleashed her vitamin water all over Tyler's designer swimsuit. He hit the water in an explosion that soaked Jenna's phone, sent Chad the goldfish flying onto the concrete, and knocked down the entire pyramid of popular kids like human bowling pins.
Dead silence.
Maya considered faking her own death. But then Tyler surfaced, vitamin water dripping from his hair, and started laughing.
"Dude," he said, grinning, "that was epic."
Jenna groaned at her ruined phone but cracked a smile. "Okay, that's actually going in my story."
And as Maya helped flopping Chad back into the pool, she realized something: sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. Plus, Tyler knew her name now. Even if he smelled like citrus vitamins.
