The Goldfish Incident

My summer was supposed to be chill—just me, my playlist, and avoiding everyone from school after my very public and very embarrassing rejection by Tyler at the spring formal. But then my neighbor Maya decided to throw a pool party that would change everything.

First problem: Buster, my chaotic golden retriever who believes fences are merely suggestions. Second problem: I was somehow invited to said party. Third problem: Tyler would be there with his new girlfriend, who everyone called Goldfish behind her back because she had these weirdly wide eyes and always seemed to be opening and closing her mouth without saying anything substantial.

The party started fine. I stayed in my corner, sipping lukewarm soda and watching people do TikTok dances that would make anyone cringe. Maya's pool was perfect—bright blue, with those fancy LED lights that made everything look aesthetic. I was surviving, barely.

Then Buster spotted his opportunity. The gate latch was loose (I would definitely be fixing that later), and suddenly my hundred-pound escape artist was bounding through the party like he owned the place, diving straight into the pool with a massive splash that drenched everyone within ten feet—including Tyler and Goldfish.

The chaos that followed was legendary. Girls screamed. Guys laughed. Tyler's hair gel dripped down his face like he'd been caught in a tropical storm. And Goldfish? She just opened and closed her mouth even more, looking like an actual fish out of water. Buster, meanwhile, swam happily around, occasionally surfacing to shake water all over people like a furry, enthusiastic sprinkler.

I jumped in to retrieve him, fully prepared to die of embarrassment right there. But as I hauled my soaking wet dog out of the pool, someone started laughing—like, actually cracking up. It was Maya's older brother Caleb, who I'd barely spoken to but had secretly thought was kind of cute in a mysterious older boy way.

"That was legendary," he said, handing me a towel. "Best party crash ever."

And somehow, instead of being the mortifying end to my already awkward summer, it became the beginning. Caleb and I spent the rest of the summer hanging out by the pool, sometimes with Buster (who was now treated like a celebrity guest), and I learned that sometimes your most embarrassing moments become your favorite stories. And Goldfish and Tyler broke up two weeks later anyway—turns out she really wasn't his type after all.

Some disasters aren't disasters at all. They're just plot twists you didn't see coming.
