The Goldfish in the Water

Maya found him sitting by the koi pond in the corporate garden, staring at the bronze sphinx that had presided over their lunch breaks for three years. The sphinx's enigmatic smile seemed crueler today.

"I know what you are," she said, her voice steady despite the hollowed-out feeling in her chest. "Corporate security hired you to dig up dirt on the merger."

David didn't look up. He trailed his fingers through the water, disturbing the goldfish that had gathered near his hand. They scattered like guilty secrets.

"Does it matter?" he finally said. "I told you things I've never told anyone."

"That's what makes it worse. You weaponized our friendship." She remembered the nights they'd spent at that terrible bar downtown, both drowning in layoffs and failed marriages, how she'd cried against his shoulder when her mother died. How he'd held her, a rock in her storm. Now every moment felt contaminated.

"They promised me a permanent position, Maya. I have rent to pay."

"And what did they want on me?"

He hesitated. The goldfish returned, nibbling at his fingers with blind trust. "Everything. You were too close to the CEO. They wanted leverage."

The irony tasted like bile. She wasn't even important enough to spy on directly—just collateral damage in someone else's game.

"Did you sleep with me for information too?"

David's head snapped up. "No. That was real."

"That's almost worse," she whispered, turning away from the pond, from him, from the sphinx's knowing eyes. "Because now I have to figure out which parts of you were the job, and which were actually my friend. And I don't think you even know the difference anymore."

The water rippled behind her, but she didn't look back.
