The Goldfish in the Room

Jordan practically sprinted into fourth period, clutching their phone like it was a live grenade. The hallway had been a total minefield today—everyone whispering, side-eyes, the works. All because of one stupid kiss at Skylar's party that apparently half the school had witnessed.

"You're radiating," Maya whispered from the adjacent desk, not looking up from her chem notes. "Like, actually glowing."

"Shut up," Jordan hissed, sliding lower in their seat. "I cannot bear another person asking me about it."

"Then stop acting like it's some big mystery." Maya finally glanced over, all sphinx-like energy behind those wire-rim glasses. "You kissed Kai. Kai kissed back. The earth continued to rotate. What's the tea?"

Jordan groaned, thunking their forehead against the desk. The drama, the overanalysis, the constant performance of identity—it was exhausting. They felt like a literal goldfish in a bowl, constantly observed, no privacy, just swimming in endless circles while everyone tapped on the glass.

"I don't even know if I LIKE them like that," Jordan mumbled into the desk. "Maybe it was just... vibing? Maybe I'm vibing with everyone? Maybe I'm vibing with no one? Have you considered THAT?"

Maya's expression softened. She tapped Jordan's arm with her pen—gently, not annoying-like. "Look, you don't have to solve your entire existence before lunch. Kai's cool about it. Nobody's actually pressed except you."

The bell rang, and suddenly there was Kai, dropping into the seat behind Jordan like it was the most natural thing in the world. Leaning forward, chin on Jordan's shoulder.

"So," Kai said, all casual confidence. "Friday? There's that indie horror movie playing downtown. We could go. Or not. Either way, I'm sitting with you at lunch."

Jordan felt something unclench in their chest. The goldfish bowl suddenly had room to breathe.

"Yeah," they said, actually smiling now. "Friday sounds good."

The sphinx had nothing on them. They'd figure this out—one awkward moment at a time.
