The Goldfish in the Phone

Lily found the old iPhone in her grandmother's attic, tucked inside a velvet box. 'This belonged to your grandpa,' Grandma said with a wink. 'But there's something special about it.' That night, Lily pressed the glowing screen. Suddenly, a tiny goldfish appeared, swimming across the display as if it were water, not glass. The fish had shimmering orange scales and bright eyes that seemed to sparkle with secrets. 'Hello!' the goldfish said, its voice like gentle bubbles. 'I'm Finn.' Lily gasped. 'You can talk?' 'Only to children with big imaginations,' Finn explained. 'I live in the space between screens and dreams.' Every evening, Finn would appear, swimming through magical underwater worlds that changed each time. Sometimes he swam through coral gardens made of jellybeans. Other times he explored crystal caves where tiny starfish told riddles. Lily would press her fingers against the screen, and somehow, she could feel the cool water and taste saltwater taffy. 'Why are you trapped in there?' Lily asked one night. Finn did a happy flip. 'I'm not trapped! I'm an explorer, collecting stories from children's dreams to keep the ocean of imagination full.' He showed Lily memories: a boy learning to ride his bike, a girl baking cookies with her mom, a baby's first laugh. 'See? Magic happens everywhere.' But soon, the iPhone's battery began to fade. Finn's swimming slowed. 'Don't worry,' Finn said when Lily started to cry. 'I'm not really leaving. Watch.' He did one magnificent leap through the air and—splash—landed in Lily's fishbowl, suddenly life-sized! 'Magic follows friends,' Finn bubbled. Now Lily has a real goldfish, and sometimes when she's feeling lonely, she can still hear Finn's voice: 'Just close your eyes and imagine. I'll meet you in the water.'
