The Goldfish in the Orange
Lila loved oranges more than anything in the world. Every afternoon after school, she would sit in her grandmother's garden and peel the bright orange fruit, letting the sweet citrus scent fill the air. But Lila was lonely. She had just moved to a new town and hadn't made any friends yet.
One day, as she peeled her afternoon orange, something magical happened. Inside the fruit, swimming in a tiny pool of juice, was a miniature goldfish with shimmering golden scales that sparkled like tiny suns.
"Hello!" said the goldfish, its voice sounding like gentle bells. "I'm Finn! And you must be Lila."
Lila nearly dropped her orange. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" Finn swam happily in the juice. "I'm a magical fish. I've been waiting for someone with a kind heart to find me. Would you like to be my friend?"
Lila's heart soared. "Yes! I'd love a friend!"
"Wonderful!" Finn splashed joyfully. "But first, I must tell you something important. Being a friend means showing up even when it's hard. It means listening, sharing, and believing in each other's dreams. Can you do that?"
"I can try," Lila promised.
Finn smiled. "Then close your eyes and make a wish!"
Lila squeezed her eyes shut. "I wish for a friend who likes adventures as much as I do."
Suddenly, the orange began to glow. Its peel unfolded like petals, growing bigger and brighter until it became a magnificent orange boat. Finn grew too, until he was the size of a real goldfish in a proper bowl.
"Hop in!" Finn called.
Lila climbed into the orange boat, and together they sailed through the sky on golden winds. They visited cloud kingdoms, danced with starlight fairies, and tasted moonberries that made you giggle.
But the real magic happened when Lila returned home. In her garden, she noticed a new girl next door, struggling to reach an orange from a high branch.
Lila rushed to help. "Hi, I'm Lila! Want to share this orange with me?"
The girl grinned. "I'm Maya! I love oranges!"
From that day on, Lila and Maya were best friends. And sometimes, when they peeled oranges together, they could hear tiny bells ringing—Finn, reminding them that the best friendships, like magic, come from kindness, courage, and an open heart.
