The Goldfish in the Orange
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house by the sea. But what she loved most was the towering palm tree in the backyard, its fronds dancing in the ocean breeze like green hair waving hello.
One afternoon, Lily sat beneath the palm, peeling an orange for a snack. She pulled apart the bright segments and something incredible happened — a tiny fish popped out!
"Hello!" squeaked the fish, no bigger than her thumb. "I'm Finnegan the Goldfish, and you've freed me from my citrus prison!"
Lily nearly dropped her orange. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" Finnegan swished his golden tail. "I'm a magical goldfish. I was trapped in that orange by a grumpy wizard who didn't like cheerful things. As thanks for saving me, I'll grant you one wish."
Lily's eyes grew wide. She could wish for anything! Toys, candy, a trip to the moon... but then she looked at Finnegan, swimming happily in a puddle of orange juice. He seemed so glad to be free.
"I wish," Lily said slowly, "that you never have to be trapped again. You should swim in the ocean, with other fish. Where do you belong?"
Finnegan's scales sparkled even brighter. "That's the kindest wish anyone has ever made."
The palm tree above them began to shimmer. Its trunk transformed into a magical waterslide that twinkled like stardust.
"Hold on!" cried Finnegan.
Lily scooped up her new friend and together they slid down the magical palm — splash! — right into the sparkling blue sea.
Finnegan darted happily through the waves. "Thank you, Lily! You'll always be my friend."
As she swam back to shore, Lily noticed something in her hand — a beautiful orange shell, glowing warm like sunshine. She smiled, knowing that sometimes the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
From that day on, whenever Lily visited, she could always spot a flash of gold beneath the waves, and the palm tree seemed to wave just a little bit brighter.
