The Goldfish in the Fedora
Maya pulled the brim of her dad's vintage fedora lower, praying the cafeteria noise would swallow her whole. Third week at Northwood High, and she was still That New Girl—the one who ate alone, the one who nobody seemed to notice unless they needed a fourth for volleyball.
Then, catastrophe.
Brian, resident tiktok prankster and heir to the varsity throne, appeared behind her with a plastic baggie containing three frantic goldfish. "Bet you won't swallow one."
The cafeteria went silent. All eyes locked on Maya's hat, then her face, then the fish.
Her stomach twisted. This was it—the make-or-break moment that defined high school hierarchies. Do the thing and gain acceptance through humiliation, or refuse and remain invisible.
"Those are living creatures," someone said.
Maya turned. It was Quinn—goth eyeliner, chaos patches on her backpack, the kind of senior who radiated I'm done with your nonsense energy. "Brian, you're literally holding three lives hostage for content. It's giving desperado."
"It's just a joke, chill—" Brian started, but Quinn was already moving.
She snatched the baggie, marched to the teacher's lounge, and returned empty-handed. "They're in the lounge aquarium now. You're welcome."
Then Quinn slid into the seat across from Maya, eyeing the fedora. "Nice hat. Vintage?"
"My dad's," Maya managed, heart still hammering.
"Sick." Quinn pulled out her phone. "I'm Quinn by the way. And you just made my entire week by not swallowing a live animal on camera. That's baseline decency, but apparently that's bar-setting these days."
Something in Maya's chest loosened. "Maya. And thanks, I guess?"
"You guess correctly." Quinn smirked. "Hey, you like thrift stores? There's this spot downtown—"
"Obsessed."
"Bet. We're going this weekend."
By lunch's end, Maya had Quinn's number, plans for Saturday, and—for the first time since moving—didn't feel like the new girl anymore. Just a girl in a cool hat who'd found her people.
And somewhere in a teacher's lounge aquarium, three goldfish swam in suspiciously peaceful circles.
