The Goldfish In My Papaya

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her papaya smoothie like it was a lifeline. The summer sun blazed overhead, turning the water into liquid diamonds, but she couldn't bring herself to jump in. Not with everyone watching.

"You gonna stand there all day?" called Fox, her oldest friend, grinning from the diving board. Fox had earned that nickname in seventh grade for her cunning ability to get them both out of detention—and sometimes into it.

"I'm just... acclimating," Maya lied, her voice barely above a whisper.

Truth was, Maya had spent the last three months homeschooling herself on social dynamics after what the Incident at Winter Formal. She'd watched enough TikToks to know that jumping into a pool fully clothed was either "main character energy" or "social suicide," and she couldn't tell which.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her crush, Jamal: *nice party 🔥*

Maya stared at the screen until her vision swam. Why had he texted her? They'd barely spoken since they'd been partnered up in biology and discovered their shared love for—

"Watch out!"

Something cold and wet hit her back. Maya yelped, dropped her phone, and her precious papaya smoothie splashed across the concrete.

Liam, the guy who'd spent all year making fun of her vintage backpack, stood there with an empty water gun, laughing with his friends. Classic bully move.

But then Fox was there, grabbing Liam's wrist. "Not cool, bro."

"Relax, I was just—"

"Just being a jerk?" Fox's voice cut through the pool noise. "Again?"

Maya's phone lay on the concrete, screen showing Jamal's text. A memory flashed through her: her childhood goldfish, Bubbles, floating at the top of its bowl. She'd cried for three days. Her mom had said, "Sometimes things just... don't make it. But you move forward."

Maya picked up her phone. Her hands stopped shaking.

You know what? She didn't need to perform anxiety for anyone. She typed back: *thx! you coming in?*

She looked at Fox, who was still staring down Liam. "Hey Fox," Maya called. "Race you to the deep end."

Fox's face lit up. "Loser buys lunch tomorrow."

"You're on."

Maya jumped. The water rushed over her, cool and shocking and perfect. When she surfaced, dripping and laughing, Jamal stood at the pool's edge, grinning.

"Nice form," he said.

Fox surfaced beside her. "Told you. Main character energy."

Maya flipped them both off, but she was smiling. The goldfish was gone, the papaya smoothie was spilled, but somehow, this summer was just beginning.
