The Goldfish in My Fedora

Jordan adjusted the brim of his dad's old fedora, feeling like a total fraud. The hat smelled like mothballs and regret, but it was the only thing keeping his sweaty palm from leaving evidence on Maya's locker door.

"Yo, Jordan!" Marcus clapped him on the back. "You gonna stand there all day or actually talk to her?"

"I'm working up to it." His heart hammered like it was trying to escape his chest. This was it - the moment he'd been overthinking since seventh grade when Maya had smiled at him in the cafeteria and he'd choked on his chocolate milk so hard that milk came out his nose. Legendary fail.

The goldfish in the plastic bag swished nervously beside him. A carnival prize from last night, rescued from his little sister's room because their mom was threatening to flush it. Now it was his impromptu conversation starter. Desperate? Absolutely.

"Just bear with me here," he whispered to the fish.

The hallway compressed with post-bell traffic. He spotted Maya at her locker, laughing with Chloe, and his stomach tried to digest itself.

"Go," Marcus shoved him.

Jordan stumbled forward, the hat sliding slightly. He caught it, then locked eyes with Maya. Her expression shifted from amused to curious.

"Jordan? You okay?"

"Fine!" he said, way too loud. Several heads turned. "I mean, yeah. Totally fine. Just... wanted to give you this."

He thrust the goldfish bag toward her. Maya stared at it, then at him, and Jordan was thirty seconds away from transferring schools when she started laughing.

"Is that... a goldfish?"

"His name is Fin," he said without thinking. "I rescued him. He needs a good home. And you seem like you'd be good at keeping things alive."

Maya's laughter softened into something that made his chest do this weird fluttery thing.

"That's actually kind of sweet," she said, taking the bag. "And I love the hat, by the way. Vintage looks good on you."

"Thanks. My dad's. From like, the nineties."

"The nineties are back. See you in English?"

"English. Yeah. Definitely."

Jordan walked back to Marcus feeling like he'd survived falling off a cliff and landed in something amazing.

"Bro," Marcus was shaking his head. "You gave her a live animal as a gift."

"It worked, didn't it?" Jordan adjusted the fedora, finally feeling like he could actually pull it off. "And she called it vintage."

Fin the goldfish got a good home. Jordan got Maya's number. And the hat became a legend, teaching him that sometimes you just have to bear through the awkward, trusting that somewhere between the sweaty palms and goldfish gifts, the real you might actually shine through.
