The Goldfish in Her Pocket

Maya adjusted the bucket hat for the seventeenth time. It was supposed to look effortless, that 'I just threw this on' aesthetic, but instead she felt like a mushroom trying to pass as fashion. The pool party raged around her — chlorine and coconut sunscreen mixing in the humid July air.

Her iPhone burned in her hand, her lifeline to social survival. Three notifications from the group chat. Someone had posted a story. If she didn't view it within three minutes, she'd be ghost-adjacent. If she did, she'd look desperate. The math never worked in her favor.

'Maya! Get in here!' Jax yelled from the deep end. His hair was wet, perfect, annoying.

'Coming!' she called back, carefully placing her phone on a dry towel. Because she was smart. Because she wasn't about to be That Girl whose phone died a watery death.

The transition from dry land to pool was always the worst part — that moment where everyone's watching, and you have to decide: dive, jump, or gingerly descend like you're entering holy water? She chose the jump.

Bad choice.

The hat flew off. Her dignity followed. And somewhere in the chaos, she swallowed half the pool.

'My hat!' she surfaced, spluttering.

'I got it!' But it wasn't Jax. It was Eli, the quiet transfer student from three weeks ago, the one nobody really knew yet. He was holding her bucket hat like it was some kind of sacred artifact.

'Thanks.' She wiped water from her eyes. 'I'm Maya.'

'Eli.' He paused. 'You have spinach in your teeth.'

Her face burned. 'What?'

'From lunch. It's been there all day.' He said it gently, like he was telling her a secret instead of exposing her social suicide. 'I didn't want to say anything, but we're about to take a group picture, and I believe in looking out for people.'

She swiped at her teeth furiously. 'Why didn't anyone tell me?'

'Everyone else was too busy trying to look cool.' He shrugged. 'Want to get out of here?'

'What?'

'There's a pond behind the tennis courts. Someone won a goldfish at the carnival and their parents wouldn't let them keep it. We're doing an underground rescue mission.' He held out his hand. 'Unless you want to go back to pretending to have fun.'

Maya looked at the pool, at Jax doing a cannonball, at her phone sitting safely on its towel. She thought about the spinach that had been living in her teeth for four hours while everyone pretended not to notice.

She grabbed her phone, dropped it in her pocket, and took Eli's hand.

'The goldfish needs a better home anyway,' she said. 'I'm naming him Spinach.'

Eli laughed. It was real. 'That's the worst name I've ever heard.'

'Maybe,' she said, walking away from the pool without looking back. 'but at least I'll never forget it.'
