The Goldfish in Her Palm
Lily was the girl who saw magic everywhere. While other kids played video games, she watched ants march to war and clouds transform into dragons.
One rainy Tuesday, something amazing happened. Lily was cupping rainwater in her hands, watching the ripples dance, when a tiny fish appeared! Not just any fish — a shimmery goldfish with scales like orange sequins and eyes that sparkled like stars.
"Hello there!" gasped Lily. The goldfish swam in circles in the water pooled in her palm.
"Hello, Lily!" the goldfish chirped. "I'm Finn! I've been waiting for someone with an imagination as big as yours!"
Lily nearly dropped him in surprise. "You can talk?"
"Only to special people," Finn said. "Want to see something magical?"
Suddenly, the water in Lily's palm began to glow. The puddle grew deeper and wider, but somehow fit perfectly in her small hands. Inside this magical water world, tiny castles appeared, and gardens with flowers the size of snowflakes.
"This is where I live!" Finn said proudly. "But I was lonely until you came along. Would you like to be my friend?"
Lily's heart swelled. "I'd love that, Finn!"
Every day after school, Lily would visit Finn in his magical water world. She would tell him stories about her day, and he would show her secrets of his tiny kingdom — the coral caves where he slept, the pearl library where he read books written in sand.
"Imagination is the real magic," Finn told her once. "You created this whole world just by believing something wonderful could happen."
Lily learned that day that the best friends don't have to be big. Sometimes the smallest friends, like a goldfish in your palm, can show you the biggest adventures.
And whenever Lily felt lonely, she would cup her hands together, close her eyes, and remember: magic lives everywhere — especially in the hearts of those who believe.
