The Goldfish in Her Palm

Lily loved sitting beneath the ancient palm tree in her grandmother's garden. Its leaves whispered secrets in the wind, and its trunk felt like the rough skin of a sleeping giant. But Lily's favorite secret was what happened on moonlit nights.

One evening, as silver light filtered through the palm fronds, Lily held out her hand. Something shimmered in the air—tiny and golden. A single goldfish, no bigger than her thumb, swam through the moonlight and landed gently in her palm.

"Hello, little friend," Lily whispered.

The goldfish didn't need water. It swam through the air around Lily, leaving trails of stardust. Together they danced among the palm leaves, the fish painting golden pictures in the night sky. Lily showed the fish her garden—her flowers, her secret hiding spots, the mouse who lived beneath the rosebush.

"You're my best friend," Lily said.

The goldfish swam closer, its scales catching the moonlight. It nibbled her palm gently, like a kiss.

But as dawn approached, the fish grew weaker. Its golden light dimmed.

"You belong to the moon," Lily realized sadly. She climbed to the highest palm branch and held her friend toward the fading night. "Go home. But come back."

The goldfish swam upward, becoming brighter and brighter until it joined the stars. Lily waved until it disappeared, feeling both happy and lonely.

Now, every full moon, Lily waits beneath the palm tree, palm open wide. And sometimes, if the magic is right, her golden friend returns for one more night of dancing among the stars.
