The Goldfish Guardian
Lily's pet goldfish, Finley, wasn't ordinary. Every night at midnight, he would swim to the front of his bowl and press his nose against the glass, watching Lily's house with serious eyes.
One evening, Lily caught him at it again. "What are you doing, Finley?"
The goldfish blew bubbles that formed shapes—a spy glass, a magnifying glass, a badge.
Lily gasped. "You're a spy!"
Finley nodded and swam excitedly. He led her to the garden, where someone had been trampling Mom's precious spinach plants. The leaves were torn, the stems bent.
"We need to protect this garden," Lily whispered. "But what can we do?"
Finley swam to a patch of perfect green spinach. He splashed water on it with his tail, and suddenly—POOF! The spinach grew enormous, glowing with sparkles.
Lily nibbled a leaf. Suddenly, she could see in the dark! Her ears could hear footsteps from miles away.
That night, Lily and Finley hid behind the tomato plants. When a rabbit hopped toward the spinach, Finley flashed his fins like signal lights. Lily stepped forward, her spinach-given powers helping her speak clearly.
"This garden belongs to my family," she said bravely. "Please eat clover instead."
The rabbit's eyes widened. "I didn't know anyone cared about this garden. I'm hungry because my family lost our home."
Lily's heart softened. "I'll help you find clover patches. And you can have some spinach—just ask first."
The rabbit became their friend, and soon, more animals came. Lily, Finley, and the rabbit squad worked together to plant extra spinach for everyone.
Finley wasn't just a spy anymore. He was a friend who had helped Lily discover that sometimes, the best adventures start with being kind to strangers—even hungry rabbits.
