The Goldfish Effect

The glass walls of the forty-second floor reflected Elena's tired expression as she watched him—Marcus, whose arrival had coincided with three leaked projects. The weight of suspicion she'd learned to bear after her brother's betrayal now pressed against her chest like a second heartbeat.

Her cat, Bast, waited at home. Bast never waited for anyone. In two years, Elena had become the cat's human—a reversal of power dynamics that felt almost familiar.

"You're overthinking it," Jenna said at lunch, slicing into her papaya with surgical precision. "Marcus is just efficient."

"My brother was a spy." Elena stirred her coffee. "Corporate. He sold pharmaceutical research and retired to Malta on the proceeds."

The papaya juice stained Jenna's lip like a wound she didn't feel.

That night, Elena sat on her balcony. Bast wound around her legs, purring with the easy confidence of a creature who had never known uncertainty. She opened the encrypted file—proprietary formulas that could destroy their division. Someone had accessed it at 3 AM.

Marcus had been logged in then.

But so had she.

The thought settled like a stone. She remembered waking at 3 AM, the fog of insomnia, working through hours she couldn't quite recall. Had she sent something? Deleted something? The goldfish in their tank—three of them, acquired after her divorce—swam in endless circles, their three-second memories a blessing she sometimes envied.

The cat jumped onto her lap. Elena stroked her fur, realizing the truth: she wasn't investigating Marcus. She was investigating herself.

She closed the laptop. The goldfish swam on, ignorant of the patterns they repeated. Tomorrow, she would confront Marcus—or she wouldn't. The outcome mattered less than the choice to make one.

Bast purred, unimpressed by existential crises. Some creatures understand what most humans never learn: the only real loyalty is to yourself.

The papaya from lunch had been perfectly ripe. She remembered that, at least.
