The Goldfish Connection

Kai's house party was supposed to be the night I finally leveled up socially. Instead, I found myself cornered by Jordan—the school's biggest bully—while my ride-or-die friend, Maya, was practically hyperventilating in the kitchen.

"You gonna answer me, or just stand there looking like a lost goldfish?" Jordan loomed over me, and I swear the bass-heavy music literally shook the framed photos on his wall. My social survival instincts kicked in: defuse, distract, escape.

Then Maya burst in, phone clutched like a lifeline. "Emergency! My mom's goldfish is dying and I left my charging cable at home! Can we bounce?"

Jordan paused, confusion flickering across his face. "Wait, goldfish?"

"It's a long story," Maya blurted, grabbing my arm. "Plus, we promised Taylor we'd help with that English project."

Something shifted. The bully's hostile energy softened. "Taylor? The one who sits behind me in bio? They're cool."

"Yeah, actually," I found myself saying, "we could probably help them with that Shakespeare analysis."

We ended up at Maya's place, feeding her mom's frankly ancient goldfish while streaming the movie version of the play. Jordan, of all people, showed up with an extra charging cable and a surprisingly insightful take on the characters. Sometimes the night doesn't go how you plan, but you find your people anyway—goldfish, cables, and all.
