The Goldfish Bowl at Midnight

Mara stood at the kitchen counter, swirling wine in a glass she'd been nursing for two hours. Down the hall, Ethan was already asleep—the man who could fall asleep anywhere, anytime, while she lay awake calculating the mortgage, the distance between them, the way his body curved away from hers in bed like a question mark she couldn't answer.

On the counter, their daughter's goldfish—so creatively named Goldie by a seven-year-old with no imagination—circled its plastic castle in endless, stupid revolutions. Mara had resisted the pet at first. Another living thing that needed feeding, another schedule to track, another small death waiting to happen. But now, standing at midnight with the refrigerator humming its lonely song, she found herself mesmerized by the fish's blind persistence.

Three years ago, she'd met someone at a conference. He had hair the color of autumn leaves and eyes that seemed to know things he hadn't yet said. He'd called her a fox—said it like a compliment, like she was something clever and wild. They'd had drinks in a hotel bar, their knees touching beneath the table. He'd asked if she was happy, and she'd heard the question as an invitation. Nothing happened. Nothing needed to. The possibility had been enough to make her marriage feel like a coat that no longer quite fit.

Ethan had started running six months after that conference. Marathons, half-marathons, 5Ks on weekends when he used to sleep in. He said it was for his health. She knew it was to get away from the house, away from her relentless questions, away from the debt of his own unexamined life. She couldn't blame him. She wanted to run too.

The goldfish surfaced, its mouth opening and closing in silent petition. Mara dropped a flake of food into the bowl. The fish consumed it without acknowledgment, without gratitude, without memory of having eaten just this morning.

'Maybe that's the trick,' she whispered to the empty kitchen. 'Maybe that's how you stay married. You just forget everything and keep swimming.'
