The Goldfish at the Top of the Pyramid

Mara hadn't meant to become a corporate spy. It just happened gradually, like learning to swim in increasingly deeper water until you forgot what shore looked like. Now she worked at Pyramid Technologies, extracting trade secrets from a company she'd once admired, reporting to handlers who treated her like disposable currency.

Her apartment held one living thing: a goldfish named Oblivion, swimming endless circles in its bowl. Sometimes she stared at it for hours, mesmerized by its three-second memory loop. She envied it. The fish never remembered what it had lost. Never remembered the way her husband's face looked when he discovered she'd been selling him out along with everyone else.

"You're like a zombie," he'd said the night he left. "Walking around with something dead inside you."

He wasn't wrong. She performed her job with mechanical precision, executed blackmail, deployed surveillance tech that made Edward Snowden look like an amateur. The pyramid scheme wasn't just financial—it was emotional. Each promotion required another betrayal, another piece of her soul carved away and sold to the highest bidder.

Tonight, something changed. Maybe it was the way the goldfish paused at the glass, watching her with what looked almost like recognition. Maybe it was the surveillance footage she'd just stolen—footage of Pyramid's CEO ordering the elimination of her predecessor.

She was at the top of the pyramid now. The view was supposed to be spectacular. Instead, it was just lonely.

Mara packed her go-bag. One backup drive. One burner phone. One decision to stop swimming and finally crawl ashore.

The goldfish watched her go. Its bowl caught the last light of the city below, a tiny universe swimming in glass, safe in its forgetfulness. Some nights, she thought, that was the only freedom left.
