The Goldfish at the Top of the Pyramid

The social hierarchy at Northwood High worked like a pyramid scheme nobody signed up for. At the base? Everyone else. At the peak? The kids whose lives looked perfect on Instagram—lives I studied from the safety of my room while my goldfish, Barnaby, stared blankly through his bowl.

"You going to Jake's party?" Marcus asked, kicking my backpack.

"No. I have... plans."

"Doing what? Running away from having fun again?" He laughed, and I hated that he was right.

My dad's dog, Buster—a chaotic golden retriever with zero chill—had chewed through the TV cable last night, leaving me with exactly zero excuses to stay home. But Marcus didn't need to know that.

Friday arrived. I stood outside Jake's house for twenty minutes, heart racing like I'd drunk three espressos. Through the window, I could see the pyramid in action: varsity jackets at the top, everyone else orbiting around them.

Then I saw her—Maya—sitting alone on the front porch steps.

"You coming in or just running away again?" she called, not looking up from her phone.

How did she know?

"My goldfish has better social skills than me," I admitted, sitting beside her. "Barnaby's got zero followers but he doesn't seem to care."

Maya actually laughed. "Last week, I went to this 'investment opportunity' my cousin invited me to. Turned out to be a pyramid scheme for protein shakes. I'm sixteen and I almost bought $200 of vanilla powder because I wanted to look like I belonged."

"Wait, seriously?"

"Seriously. I sat through two hours of presentations about 'financial freedom' before I realized I was just embarrassed about being broke." She passed me a Dr. Pepper. "We're all just pretending."

Inside, the bass thumped. People posed for photos that would disappear in 24 hours.

"You wanna..." I pointed to the door.

"Nah." She cracked the soda open. "Let them chase their cable TV moment. I'd rather sit here and make fun of them."

"With me?"

"Someone's gotta keep you company." She grinned. "Besides, Barnaby sounds like a genius."
