The Goldfish at the Top of the Pyramid

Maya's thumb hovered over her iPhone screen, doom-scrolling through posts from people she barely knew. The Summer Blowout Pool Party was in full swing around her, but she felt like she was watching it through a glass wall.

'Hey, Earth to Maya.' Her best friend Riya plopped down beside her on the pool deck, dripping wet. 'You're literally at a party. Not a funeral.'

Maya locked her phone. 'I'm just... observing the social pyramid, you know? The popular kids over by the waterfall, the rest of us scattered around the edges like debris.'

Riya rolled her eyes. 'You and your pyramids. Not everything's a sociology project.' She paused. 'Wanna see something cool?'

'Your dad's new car?'

'Better. Follow me.'

They crept around the pool's edge to a forgotten corner behind the filtration system. There, in a sad little bowl, swam a single goldfish — orange and miserable.

'His name is Gary,' Riya whispered. 'Some sophomore left him here last week. Probably for dramatic effect.'

Maya stared at the fish, doing frantic laps in his tiny world. 'He's trapped.'

'Yeah.' Riya grinned. 'Wanna break him out?'

The operation was chaotic. They smuggled Gary in a Solo cup to Maya's house, where her mom's pristine aquarium sat empty in the living room (a failed hobby from 2019). Gary went from prison to paradise in five minutes.

'Man,' Maya said, watching him explore his new kingdom, 'this fish has better real estate than I do.'

Riya checked her phone. 'Speaking of real estate, check who posted a pic of themselves at the party. Caption: "living my best life".'

Maya looked at the photo: someone positioned strategically at the top of the metaphorical pyramid, phone perfect, smile polished. She looked at Gary, happily oblivious to social hierarchies, just doing his fish thing.

'You know what?' Maya said. 'Gary's got it figured out.'

'Figured what out?'

'The whole pyramid thing. It's just a tiny bowl if you never leave it.' She unlocked her iPhone and opened Instagram. 'Wanna help me find a better angle?'
