The Goldfish at the Top of the Pyramid

The goldfish swam in endless circles around its glass bowl, oblivious to the metaphor. Elena watched it while waiting for Greg's door to open. Her graying hair—premature, she liked to tell herself—was pulled back in the tight bun she wore for important meetings. At forty-three, she'd stopped pretending the gray was 'distinguished' and started calling it 'evidence.'

Greg's assistant, a twenty-something with the kind of shiny hair that comes from expensive conditioning, smiled thinly. "He'll be another ten minutes. Corporate pyramid scheme emergency."

Elena declined the papaya smoothie offered, suddenly nauseous. Papaya had been their thing. She and Greg, late nights in the office, sharing tropical fruits like they were sharing secrets instead of just trading upward mobility for dignity. He'd bring papaya from his weekend trips to the city farmer's market, feeding her segments with his fingers while discussing quarterly projections.

She'd been swimming in that particular river in Egypt for three years. Denial was comfortable. Denial came with a corner office and a salary that justified the compromises.

The goldfish bumped its nose against glass. Elena felt like doing the same.

Greg's door opened. Another woman walked out—blonde, thirty-something, wearing Elena's exact blazer. The papaya memory curdled in her stomach. Not an affair, then. Just rotation. Staffing optimization at the personal level.

"Elena," Greg said, gesturing her in. His silver hair caught the light. "Close the door."

She stood instead. "Actually, I wanted to discuss my resignation."

He blinked. The goldfish continued swimming, indifferent to the extinction events occurring beyond its glass world. Elena walked out, past the pyramid hierarchy chart on the wall, past the papaya-colored accent pillows Greg's decorator had selected, past the reflection of a woman who'd finally stopped swimming in circles.

Somewhere, a goldfish found a way to jump its bowl.
