The Goldfish at the Top of the Pyramid

The treadmill display mocked me: 47 minutes. Running nowhere, going fast. Outside, the Los Angeles palm trees bent in the Santa Ana winds—nature doing yoga while I chased cardio endorphins to forget tomorrow's quarterly review.

"You're thinking about it again," Mara said, not looking up from her magazine. She knew. The goldfish in the corner bowl swam in endless circles, its three-second memory a luxury I'd kill for. To forget the corporate pyramid scheme I'd bought into—literally, with my signing bonus.

The Fox—that's what we called Randall—had positioned himself perfectly.三层 up, directly under the V.P. He'd stolen my presentation last month, repackaged my data as "strategic insights," and now he was probably in his corner office, palms sweating over his own review while mine loomed.

"Why do we do this?" I asked, gasping. The incline kicked up.

Mara finally looked at me. "Because some people collect stamps. We collect cortisol and validation from men who wouldn't recognize us in the parking lot."

She pulled a small velvet pouch from her purse. "I saw her. The psychic on Melrose."

"You believe that palm-reading bullshit now?"

"She told me I'd meet someone who'd ask the right questions but stay for the wrong answers." She kissed my forehead. "Clock out at 48."

I hit stop. The goldfish surfaced, bubbles rising like tiny prayers. Tomorrow, Randall would get the promotion he'd foxed his way into. I'd get a polite email about "areas for development." But tonight, Mara was making risotto and the Santa Anas were blowing hard enough to scatter all the lies we told ourselves about climbing anything worth reaching.
