The Goldfish at the Edge of Everything

The pool was empty at 3 AM, which was exactly why Elena had chosen it. The hotel's rooftop pool shimmered with that artificial blue glow that made everything feel both hyper-real and dreamlike. She'd left her phone in the room, left Mark's text on read, left her dignity somewhere between the lobby and the fourth floor.

She slipped into the water, letting the cool silence envelop her. This was supposed to be their weekend—the weekend she and Sarah had planned for months, after Sarah promised she was leaving him. The lying bastard. The cheating friend.

"You're overreacting," Sarah had said when Elena discovered they were still together. "It's not like we were ever really together."

The words echoed in the chlorine-scented air.

At the edge of the pool, in a small stone basin, a single goldfish circled endlessly. Elena watched it through the rippling water—orange and white flashes in the darkness, swimming its infinite laps in a prison it didn't know existed. She wondered what the goldfish would do if someone suddenly opened the basin into the ocean. Would it swim toward freedom, or would it hide, terrified of anything larger than its tiny universe?

She'd been like that once. Before Sarah. Before she'd learned to expand her world, to trust someone with her softest places.

The goldfish surfaced, gulping air, and Elena felt something crack open inside her chest. She realized then that she wasn't angry at Sarah for choosing Mark. She was angry at herself for shrinking her universe down to fit one person's capacity to love her back.

She climbed out of the pool, water streaming off her body like shed skin. The goldfish continued its circles, beautiful and oblivious. Elena wrapped herself in a towel and headed toward the elevator, not toward her room to cry, but toward the hotel bar, where a stranger with kind eyes had been watching her all evening.

Some fish were meant to find the ocean.
