The Goldfish at the Bottom of a Vitamin Bottle

Marissa stood before the bathroom mirror, swallowing her daily vitamin with practiced indifference. The orange plastic bottle caught the morning light, casting an amber glow across her tired face. Three years of marriage to David had reduced her life to this: supplements, routine, and the quiet erosion of desire.

She remembered their wedding day—how he'd surprised her with two goldfish in a bowl, naming them Romance and Passion even though she'd told him she hated fish. They were supposed to be symbolic, a living metaphor for their marriage. Now, Romance floated belly-up in the kitchen bowl, while Passion darted furiously through water clouded with uneaten flakes.

David was already at the office, probably already drinking coffee with Sarah from accounting. Marissa had seen the way Sarah looked at him during the holiday party—like he was a nutrient she'd been deficient in for years. The thought tasted sour, like old vitamins.

She filled a glass with water from the tap, watching it swirl. The goldfish bowl sat on the counter, a single orange survivor swimming in endless circles. Marissa reached in, her fingers breaking the surface tension. Passion wriggled against her palm, slimy and alive, desperate for freedom she couldn't give.

"Sorry, buddy," she whispered. "We're all just swimming in our own shit until someone changes the water."

She placed him back gently. He darted to the bottom, hiding behind the plastic castle. Her phone buzzed—David, asking if she'd remember to pick up dry cleaning. The orange vitamin bottle stood empty on the counter. She tipped it over, listening to the hollow rattle.

Tomorrow, she decided. Tomorrow she'd buy him a proper tank. And tomorrow, she'd ask David about Sarah. But today, she swallowed another vitamin with tap water, watching the goldfish swim his lonely circles, both of them waiting for someone to finally change the water.
