The Goldfish and the Mechanical Bull

Marcus's fingers trembled as he clutched his iPhone, the glowing screen showing 47 unread notifications from the group chat. 'Bro, you're actually gonna ride it?' Liam texted, followed by a string of skull emojis.

The mechanical bull at the county fair looked less like a ride and more like a creature from his worst nightmares. Its painted eyes seemed to mock him. But Chloe was watching from beside the cotton candy stand, her phone in hand, probably livestreaming this moment to her 2,000 followers.

'Marcus!' his mom called, appearing with a plastic bag containing a tiny goldfish she'd won at some booth. 'Hold this while I find your dad.'

Great. Now he was about to potentially embarrass himself in front of his crush while holding a literal fish in a bag. The goldfish stared at him through the plastic, its mouth opening and closing like it was laughing.

The bull operator strapped him in. 'Eight seconds, kid. Don't embarrass yourself.'

The bull erupted beneath him—violent, unpredictable, terrifying. Marcus's phone buzzed in his pocket with each jolt, notifications blowing up. But somewhere around second five, he stopped caring. He leaned into the chaos, found his rhythm, and actually rode that mechanical bull like his life depended on it.

When he stumbled off, legs shaking but adrenaline pumping, the small crowd cheered. Chloe was actually smiling, filming with her phone but looking impressed.

'Not bad,' she said. 'That goldfish have a name yet?'

Marcus looked at the tiny fish swimming in its bag, then back at the beast he'd just conquered. 'Betty,' he said without thinking. 'Like my grandma. She's tough too.'

Chloe laughed—a real, unfiltered laugh that made him forget about Instagram, followers, and everything else. 'Wanna get some lemonade? Betty can come too.'

The goldfish bag swayed as they walked away from the bull, the mechanical beast already forgotten. Marcus's phone stayed in his pocket. For the first time all night, he didn't feel the need to check it.
