The Goldfish and the Lightning Storm

Lily peered into the glass bowl on her nightstand. Inside, a tiny orange goldfish named Sparkle swam in endless circles.

"You must be lonely," Lily whispered, dropping a pinch of food into the water. Sparkle darted to the surface, his scales shimmering like captured sunlight.

That evening, a storm rolled in. Thunder rattled the windowpanes. Suddenly—FLASH!—a bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree outside. The whole house trembled.

When the lights flickered back on, Lily gasped. Sparkle was glowing! His orange scales pulsed with soft, golden light, and he was floating three inches above the water.

"Lily," the goldfish bubbled, "I need your help."

Lily rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"

"The lightning gave me magic powers for one hour," Sparkle explained. "But magic makes me very hungry. Do you have any special vitamins? The kind that sparkle?"

Lily's grandmother kept a jar of colorful vitamins on the kitchen counter. They were shaped like stars and moons. Lily grabbed the jar and shook out a golden star vitamin.

Sparkle nibbled it—CHOMP, CHOMP, CHOMP—and suddenly grew larger. His fins transformed into feathery wings. With a flutter, he soared out of the bowl and circled Lily's room.

"Thank you, friend!" Sparkle chirped. "Because of your kindness, I can grant you one wish."

Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys, or candy, or adventures... but she looked at Sparkle swimming alone in his bowl all day, every day.

"I wish for you to have a friend," Lily said.

Sparkle's eyes twinkled. He swished his tail, and—POOF!—another goldfish appeared, this one silver as moonlight. Her name was Splash, and she swam circles around Sparkle, both of them glowing with happiness.

"Now we're never lonely again," Sparkle said. "And neither are you, Lily. You're our friend forever."

The magic faded as the storm passed. Sparkle and Splash settled into their bowl, side by side. Lily drifted off to sleep watching her two new friends swim together, knowing that kindness creates the best magic of all.
